GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: New Zealand research vessel "Taranui". Year of discovery: 1970. History: Named in association with Kahurangi Point, the closest geographic feature on the nearby New Zealand mainland. ‘Kahurangi’ means ‘precious’ in Maori language.
