GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: New Zealand research vessels "Taranui" and "Tangaroa". Year of discovery: 1981. History: Named from the nearby Taiaroa Hill, which was originally called "Pukekura", meaning "red hill" in Maori language. Formerly, Taiaroa Canyon.    
Additional information (en): This feature is an E-W aligned canyon incised into the outer continental shelf, off Otago Peninsula, on the SE coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The name first appeared on NZ Coastal Bathymetry Series (CBS) chart "Oamaru" in 1981. Maximum depth (m): 1300.
