GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Chinese research vessel "Haiyangdizhi Sihao". Year of discovery: 1999. History: Xinghan means “a galaxy of shining stars in the sky”. When R/V Hai Yang Di Zhi Si Hao was on a research cruise in this area during the night, the Milky Way was shining bright like a huge ribbon in the sky. The feature is thus named as a memory of the impressed bright stars of the Milky Way seen by the discoverer on board. |
